Who we are and what we do...
Laughing Yaffle Crafts is a small online company specialising in hand-dyed sock yarns and sock-knitting accessories. If you have any questions or comments please contact us at info[at]laughingyaffle.com, or fill in the form on the 'Contact Us' page - it should really say 'Contact Alison' but there you go!

We don’t have a bricks and mortar shop – all our business takes place online. Please only use the address in the unlikely event of a return.

Order Processing Time

Most of our products you see on the website are in stock at the time. However, from time to time, the yarn may be out of stock and we may have to dye sufficient to fulfil your order; or the accessories may be out of stock and we need to order more. If this happens, we will inform you and you have the right to cancel. Otherwise, we aim to process your order within 48 hours, although at peak times your order may take longer. Our orders are sent using Royal Mail (in the UK and Europe) and can take up to 10 days to arrive. If you haven’t heard from us in this time, please don’t hesitate to contact us using the phone number or email above.

A note about hand-dyed yarns

All our yarn is dyed by hand, usually three skeins at a time, by Alison. The nature of hand-dyeing means that there will be variations in the dye distribution throughout the skein, such as spotting, blending and patches of colour, and this is an intentional part of the design of hand-dyed, multi-coloured yarns. However, I’m only human, and if you find a great part of the yarn hasn’t dyed properly and is the colour of un-dyed, white yarn, and this was not specified in the colour description, please contact us to arrange a replacement.  I’d be mortified if a skein had slipped through the net and you were unhappy with it!

New to sock knitting?

Our hand-dyed yarns will be sent to you in a skein. You will have to unravel your skein into a ball in order to knit with it without getting into a tangle! If you want to have your skein wound for you, go to our 'Get Your Skeins Wound' section.

Unrepeatable colours
The way Alison hand-paints yarn means that the colourways are not repeatable, so buy the skein while you can! We prefer to explore new and exciting variations of colour rather than repeat old colourways so we keep our stock fresh and exciting for you to enjoy knitting with.

Colours on-screen
We work hard to capture accurately the colour of our yarns on the website, and they are accurate when they leave our monitor! However our computer monitor isn’t calibrated the same way as yours will be, which is sadly a factor beyond our control. For this reason, we ask that you take the colour on the screen as an approximation only. We’ve added colour descriptions alongside the yarn for extra help, but if you need assistance in selecting a colour, please email us.

Washing your finished garment and colour-fastness
We recommend that you hand-wash anything you’ve knitted from our yarn using a wool-kind gentle detergent and cool water. We have tried to ensure that the colours in the yarn stay put, but this cannot always be guaranteed, and some bleeding and fading after washing is inevitable – just like your favourite pair of jeans!

This is especially true of the very dark or intense colours, such as the Nightshades or Brightshades, where the dye can run despite our very best efforts. Also - dye residue can transfer to your fingers sometimes!! This can be a problem with yarns dyed with a large percentage of turquoise or black. Be assured that the dye is NON-toxic, and will not harm you! Residue can be removed by washing your hands.

If you have knitted your garment and you find the colour is still running off in the water, the dye manufacturer recommends using a teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda, added to a first rinse, to soak your garment in. After this, use a tablespoon of white vinegar or citric acid to add to the soak, and finally finish with a rinse of fabric conditioner.

Please be aware that these are hand-dyed, artist-produced yarns, and aren't from a large factory with factory conditions! As such, colourfastness is not guaranteed but is instead strived for to the best of our abilities, and you are advised to wash your knitted garments separately from other items in your wash.

A word or two about pooling and Flashing
It is impossible for us to predict how your socks will turn out. Everyone knits at a different gauge and the colours dyed will knit up differently for each person. ’Pooling’ and ‘flashing’ of colours in a sock is part of the roller-coaster ride of knitting with hand-dyed yarns! We have to say that we don’t consider this to be a fault in our yarns. If you really dislike this as a design feature of your socks, then we suggest knitting from two balls of yarn. Simply split your skein into two 50g balls, and knit alternate rows from each ball. This can alleviate the tendency of colours to stack on top of each other and can produce a less defined pattern.

Returns and Refunds Policy

We want you to be completely happy with your yarn and knitting accessories! If you find that despite taking into consideration all the above, you are still not happy with your purchase, please email us with the nature of the problem, and we will contact you to try and get things happy again!

All our yarn is milled in the UK, and is then skeined by hand at Laughing Yaffle. Although we try hard to banish the bad skeins from our stock, we can’t check each and every one! So it is that sometimes errors slip through, such as an under-plyed yarn, or a skein with a ridiculous number of knots in it. Please let us know about this and we can arrange a replacement skein for you – we don’t want you to be disappointed with any yarn you buy from Laughing Yaffle!

Within EU law, customers have the right to change their minds within 7 days following their receiving the item. If you feel you need to return an item, it must be in its original, saleable condition, along with proof of purchase, and unless the item is defective or faulty, you are then responsible for all the postage and packing charges incurred in returning the item to us.  We recommend that when you return an item, you send it by recorded delivery. We check all our returns and if we decide the item isn’t faulty, we reserve the right to refuse a refund.

Please send your returns to:

Right, that's the end of the boring legal stuff, now take me back to the yarn!
